Looking for a download helper

Currently running Ubuntu 7.10 and I'm in need of a download helper besides the one that comes with firefox. My internet is pretty unsteady (courtesy of living in Libya) and I've also got a quota, so I can't be downloading 350M files 5 or 6 times because it didn't go all the way through.

So I need a download manager that would automatically restart a download if the net went down, also something that I could conceivably pause if I get a Gizmo phone call. (again, I"m at max 256k on a good day when it rained the night before) I tried Retreiver but for some reason the installer turned up a blank white screen. Multiget I simply can't figure out apparently because it wouldn't download a file from http.

Can anyone recommend something? Thanks!
