Newb beyond newb

Hey, all,

After a system crash, I've decided to make the leap to Ubuntu on my main desktop machine, having had exceptionally good luck with it on my laptops and my backup desktop computer.

Here's the issue: I've got a lot of files that I want to keep that I can't currently access. None of them are particularly big, but they're things like pictures that I took of my dad the summer before he died and things like that. I know that I can partition the hard drive, but I don't exactly understand what that signifies. Is there any way to install and pinpoint JPG and Word files?

Thanks for the assist, y'all.
